The application was developed by APA - Portuguese Environment Agency, IP, as a tool for the rapid dissemination of up-to-date information during the bathing season regarding beaches and the quality of coastal, transitional, or inland bathing waters of Mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions.

You can select your favorite beaches, check the water quality, awards granted, available facilities and services, as well as review the latest analyses of bathing water quality.

The information provided by APA is complemented by daily weather forecast data from IPMA - Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, IP, as well as tidal information provided by the Hydrographic Institute. For beaches that provide this feature, it is also possible to view images from on-site cameras.

WATER QUALITY MONITORING

Throughout the bathing season, APA ensures the performance of analyses to assess if the waters are suitable for bathing, thus ensuring greater safety for you and your loved ones.

EVALUATION OF BATHING WATER QUALITY

Prior to the start of the bathing season and based on results from the past 4 years, APA classifies each bathing water as "EXCELLENT," "GOOD," "ACCEPTABLE," or "POOR."

During the bathing season, water quality is periodically evaluated to verify if bathing suitability is maintained. If water quality values continue to permit bathing, it is considered "Suitable"; if a value exceeds the standard, it is deemed "Unsuitable," potentially leading to advisories or even bans on bathing temporarily or until the end of the season.

BEACH OCCUPANCY STATUS

In the current context, high concentrations at beaches may increase contagion risks if hygiene and safety rules are not followed. The 2021 bathing season maintains regulations concerning traffic flow at beach entrances, bathing facilities, and beach area occupancy to adhere to recommended physical distancing.

To prevent overcrowding at beaches, concessionaires or local authorities in the case of non-concessioned beaches indicate occupancy status using colored flags at beach entrances: "Green" for low occupancy (up to 50% usage), "Yellow" for high occupancy (50% to 90% usage), and "Red" for full occupancy (over 90% usage).

Select beaches on the app with low occupancy, lifeguard service, good quality standards, and other important conditions for you.
